Ronald Frankau's Page
Ronald Frankau (1894-1951) was a cabaret comedian who began broadcasting for the BBC in 1925.
His recording output for the Parlophone label was generally considered too near the knuckle for broadcasting but
he worked well on radio and was a favourite of the notoriously hard to please Lord Reith. Frankau's prominence
in comedy was enhanced by a partnership with Tommy Handley when they portryaed the characters Murgatroyde and Winterbottom
in 1934.
The material that Frankau used, usually accompanied by Monte Crick at the piano, was penned entirely by the comedian
himself and his delivery in clipped Etonian tones made him sound somehow naughtier. Indeed he was also a writer
of books, somewhat ironically in light of his recorded works, for children.
Monte Crick went on in later life to find a different kind of fame when he played the part of Dan in the BBC's
long running radio soap opera - The Archers.
