The Andrews Sisters
This prolific and successful girl vocalist group recorded many successful discs. They often worked with other stars of the times, noteably Bing Crosby, and enjoyed widespread admiration throughout their careers. Their total disc sales have been estimated at 60 million and they appeared in 17 'important' films as well as in variety and cabaret..
The girls sang on seven million selling records, two of their own in 1937 and 1944, with Crosby in 43, 44 &
46 and the last with Guy Lombardo, also in1946. The songs were:
Bei mir bist du schoen(Secunda & Jacobs) English lyrics by Sammy Cahn - This was the first million seller by a female group and the title is probably one of the most mis-heard of all time (My mere bits of shame). Recorded 24th November 1937.
Pistol packin' mama (with Crosby) (Al Dexter) recorded Los Angeles, 27th September 1943.
Jingle Bells (with Crosby) (J. S. Pierpoint) recorded at the same session.
Rum and Coca-Cola (Moray Amsterdam & Paul Baron)
Don't fence me in (with Crosby) (Cole Porter) recorded in Los Angeles 25th July 1944. Number 1 for 8 weeks in the USA.
South America take it away (with Crosby) (Harold Rome) recorded in Los Angeles 11th May 1946.
